Verse 1)I woke up in heaven with my sweet wife,Holding my hand at the start of this new life. The sky was the color of a fresh, fuzzy peach,With no more hard roads for our spirits to reach.(Verse 2)My boots sat so neat by a low, stone wall,Where nothing can break and nothing can fall. But I looked in the stream at my messy old hair,And wondered if god does haircuts up here.(Verse 3)I dug in my pockets for dollars and cents,And wondered if heaven requires any rent.My wife only laughed and she patted my hand,Saying time is the money in this happy land.(Verse 4)A cool little breeze made me pause on the grass,And wonder if health here could wither and pass. Can you catch a strange sickness or catch a disease?Or are we safe now from the chill of a sickly breeze?(Verse 5)But God made a day for a picnic so grand,With sweet red wine and fresh bread in our hand.We laid out the blankets beneath a deep shade,To talk about all of the things He had made.(Verse 6)Yes, God would be there on the edge of the sheet,With dust from the universe right on His feet. And you could ask questions of why things are so,And wait for the secrets you’re longing to know.(Verse 7)So He gave us a smile,And spoke of a boy who lived back a long while.A boy who woke up with his hair bright and blue,Like a piece of the morning all covered in dew.(Verse 8)The people asked then if a sickness took hold,Or if a strange fever had made him so blue and so old.But God shuffled His feet and He didn’t reply,He just glanced around with a twinkle in His eye.(Verse 9)We cleared our own throats when the silence grew long,And waited to see where He went with His song. Then God just replied with words from his mouth,That every wild duck knows the way to the south.
