TITLE: MAY I HAVE MY THINKING BACK? [Spoken Intro] Back in nineteen forty-five, A Church magazine said: “When our leaders speak, the thinking has been done.” Well… I was just about to use mine. [Verse 1] That little sentence made the rounds; It sounded safe and neat. But President George Albert Smith Said, “That’s not what we teach.” Then years went by; another line Came knocking at the door: “When the prophet speaks,” it said, “The debate is over.” A slogan sure is simple, But faith must search and pray. The Lord did not give me a mind To pack it all away. [Chorus] The thinking has been done— May I have mine back? I need it when I study; I need it when I ask. I’ll honor faithful servants Who point me to the Son. God gave me mind and Spirit— So the thinking isn’t done. [Verse 2] The people there in Berea Heard Paul, then checked the Word. They welcomed what the man had said, Then tested what they heard. Neephi asked his brothers plainly, “Have ye inquired of the Lord?” Moro-nigh said, “Ask the Father, And let the Spirit show.” [Bridge] This isn’t disrespect, And I’m not picking fights. I listen, pray, and take it to The Lord who gives me light. No title knows Him for me; No borrowed witness will do. I’ll listen to His servants— Then ask the Master too. [Final Chorus] The thinking isn’t finished When a leader says, “Amen.” That’s when I take it to the Lord And hear His voice again. I’ll honor faithful servants Who point me to the Son. God gave me mind and Spirit— So the thinking isn’t done. [Spoken Outro] Leader spoke? Check. I listened? Check. Have I inquired of the Lord? Still working on that one.
