Everybody Knows Us Here
[Verse 1] Same back door behind the bar, Same cable caught beneath the case. The owner sees us coming in And starts to clear a little space. Jett checks his strings. Rock checks the fridge. Bosun checks who's running late. Cutter's found a working socket. Zeek says human men sound great. Akida laughs and takes her place. I lean into the microphone. Somebody hollers from the back, You finally learned to use a phone? Yeah, sorry, we were occupied. We took the long way here. Rocky hits that first low note. The whole damn room draws near. [Chorus] Everybody knows us here. They know the noise. They know the names. They know the truck that needs a push. They know who takes the blame. If you need a song, we'll play it. Need a hand, we're always near. You don't have to face it on your own. Everybody knows us here. [Verse 2] Jett can make six strings sound like Ten hands nobody else can see. Rocky's got the floorboards moving Before I even count to three. Bosun brings the thunder down, Then holds us steady through the turn. Cutter lifts the sax and finds A melody we ought to learn. Zeek builds a sky above the room From keys and wires and blinking lights. Akida picks the song she wants. I get the hell out of her light. Different roads that brought us here. Different boots we used to wear. Now when one of us looks over, Someone's always standing there. [Chorus] Everybody knows us here. They know the noise. They know the names. They know the truck that needs a push. They know who takes the blame. If you need a song, we'll play it. Need a hand, we're always near. You don't have to face it on your own. Everybody knows us here. [Verse 3] Sometimes it's a roadside ditch. Sometimes a missing dog at dusk. Sometimes a call at half past ten: There's something in the brush. We don't laugh and hang the phone up. We've been strange enough ourselves. You don't send a frightened neighbor Off to find somebody else. We know the cuts between the trees. We know which tracks will wash away. We know when someone needs a ride And when somebody needs to stay. We didn't put a sign up. Didn't swear to rule the wood. We just kept on showing up When somebody said we should. [Bridge] We can fill a room in Jersey. Cross the bridge, we're just some band. That's all right. I've got enough To carry in these bark-built hands. I don't need the whole world watching. I don't need a bigger name. If we leave it better than we found it, That's a decent kind of fame. The place we love is more than trees. It's every life between. We leave the stage. We take the call. We look out for our own. That's what we mean. [Final Chorus] Everybody knows us here. They know the noise. They know the names. They know the boys who haul the gear. They know who stays till late. If you need a song, we'll play it. If you need us, we'll be near. You don't have to face it on your own. Everybody knows us here. [Outro] The last chord rings. The lights come up. There's chairs to stack and gear to clear. Same back door. Same stubborn truck. We'll see you when you need us. Everybody knows us here.
