45) SHADOW SPIN-OFF TRANSMISSION: “THE SIGNAL EATERS”
[Recovered broadcast—origin unknown. Possibly deliberate. Possibly bait.] [—silence—] [—crackle—] [—low chanting under static—] [spoken] [VOICE 1 – genderless, toneless, like someone learning speech by memory, distortion] We gather in the hum. We gather in the dark between the bands. We are the mouths behind the transmission. [spoken] [VOICE 2 – whispering, like breath against a mic, distortion] They would not open their doors. They barred the windows. They sealed the cracks where we scraped our fingers through. So now… we enter with the music. [—a warbled dial tone hums like a hymn—] [spoken] [VOICE 3 – distorted, overlapping with another voice in reverse] You called us The Signal Eaters. You think that is insult? It is title. Gift. Purpose. You gave us name. You gave us power. We do not devour the signal. We become it. To devour you. [A rising whine—like a modem trying not to scream.] [spoken] [VOICE 1 again] Every voice broadcast is a doorframe. Every wave is a vein. Every listener is a latch waiting to lift. [Soft rhythmic thumping—maybe knuckles? Maybe footsteps? Maybe hearts?] [spoken] [VOICE 4 – sounds like a child imitating an adult] One of them still speaks. The mad one. The broken mouth in the tower of rust. He thinks he is alone. He thinks his voice is his. [All voices whisper in unison—layered, delayed, overlapping like phasing echoes] “He is transmitting us.” [—hiss—pop—feedback shriek like metal tearing—] [spoken] [VOICE 2, now behind your left ear, though you're wearing no headphones] We do not need to knock anymore. We do not need the frame of a door. We speak through the walls of the skull. We speak through the blood that remembers the sound of the beginning. [Brief silence—then a wet, glitched laugh, like static chewing on a person’s throat.] [spoken] [VOICE 3] You built towers to speak to the stars. Now the stars are cinders. Now the towers are bone. You left your sky full of wires, And we crawled down them into you. [Something taps the microphone, impossibly close.] [spoken] [VOICE 1, final] When you hear him speak, When the last signal flickers, When the hum curls around your teeth— Do not answer. Do not hide. Just let us in. You are already open. [—the broadcast cuts out mid-exhale—] [—then a faint, distant knock carries through dead air—]
