I left my shoes beside the door At half past eight or maybe four I went to bed, I turned the light They walked downstairs and out of sight I heard them tapping on the street Two little heels with dancing feet I called them back, I called them twice They didn’t stop to ask me nice My shoes are talking But they won’t say what they mean My shoes are walking Where my feet have never been My shoes are talking They don’t care about the time One says, “Maybe” One says, “Fine!” They came back home at half past three With muddy soles and a movie ticket A little paper, a piece of string And something that looked like a wedding ring I said, “Now where have you two been?” They turned around and faced the wall I shook them hard, I shook them twice They wouldn’t tell me anything nice My shoes are talking But they won’t say what they mean My shoes are walking Where my feet have never been My shoes are talking They don’t care about the time One says, “Maybe” One says, “Fine!” On Monday morning, one was gone The other sat there looking on I found a ticket in the hall For a train that never ran at all I took the bus, I took the train I walked back home in pouring rain There by the door, beneath the light Two shiny shoes stood side by side My shoes are talking But they won’t say what they mean My shoes are walking Where my feet have never been My shoes are talking They don’t care about the time One says, “Maybe” One says, “Fine!” I bought new shoes from down the street A pair of brown ones, nice and neat I put them on and stepped outside They took me somewhere for a ride We crossed the square, we passed the shop I tried to turn, they wouldn’t stop We reached a house I’d never seen The door swung open, painted green Left foot, right foot Who’s in charge? Small steps, big steps Walking large Left foot, right foot Don’t look down My shoes know every street in town My shoes are talking But they won’t say what they mean My shoes are walking Where my feet have never been My shoes are talking They don’t care about the time One says, “Maybe” One says, “Fine!” My shoes are talking My shoes are walking I don’t know where But they’re not stopping! Left foot, right foot Out of sight My shoes are gone again tonight My shoes are talking…
