But I Had To Be A Boy When I was three or maybe four I learned that wishes live next door In storybooks where dreams come true Where fairy dust can make you new A wand could change a frog to man A pumpkin turned into a grand old van So why I wondered couldn’t joy Turn me from a boy There were stars to wish upon And candles you could blow And Santa came with anything That your heart could hold There were prayers you said at night To the God who hears each voice But He made me what I was And I had to be a boy There was a girl who lived up the street Barefoot summers ribbons and heat She’d spin in dresses hair like gold While I watched her world unfold I told my mama I could try If you want a daughter I can comply She smiled and said with gentle joy God wants you to be a good boy There were stars to wish upon And candles you could blow And Santa came with anything That your heart could hold There were prayers you said at night To the God who hears each voice But He’d already made His choice And I had to be a boy Still I dreamed of fairy wings And shoes that danced and songs to sing Of stories told where truth is kind Where what you feel is what you find But in this world of make believe I learned what I could not achieve No spell no wish no toy no ploy Could change the fact I was a boy There were stars to wish upon And candles you could blow And Santa came with anything That your heart could hold But the magic never came for me At least not in that guise of joy The girl I dreamed was born inside But outside I was the boy
