III-XXXVI — FIVE MARKS [INTRO — WAR COUNCIL | 4/4 ~84 | LOW DREADNOUGHT | MUTED TELECASTER | MAP-TABLE PERCUSSION] [MALE BARITONE — third-person throughout] [VERSE 1 — THE COUNCIL] Every sheriff came that morning. Every captain. Every chief. County colors filled the ranch house. Maps lay weighted underneath. Della stood beside her riders. Forest Folk stood near the door. Jamie represented six men Where Crown Junction owed them more. Jack waited for the room to settle. Then Sarah drew the first black line. “This is where we meet them.” [VERSE 2 — FIRST LINE] Jack pointed north. “We don't hold this ground forever.” A sheriff frowned. “Then why defend it?” Sarah: “To make them pay for it.” Jack tapped the line. “Rifles forward. Shotguns close. Archers farther back. Fire until your ammunition reaches what your captain sets. Then leave.” The sheriff stared. “Retreat?” Sarah: “Withdraw.” “What's the difference?” Jack: “About three miles.” [VERSE 3 — SECOND LINE] Sarah drew another line behind it. “You fall back here. Fresh ammunition meets you. Water. Horses. Replacement guns. The second line is already waiting.” Jack: “The dead keep coming. They cross the ground you've already made them pay for. Then we do it again.” A captain leaned across the table. “And when the second line runs low?” Sarah drew another. “Third.” [VERSE 4 — TELESCOPE] [DRUMS BEGIN STEADY MARCH] Line behind line. Ridge behind ridge. Each one narrower than before. Every withdrawal pulls us tighter. Every mile costs them more. Nobody runs. Nobody lingers. Nobody dies protecting dirt. When your captain gives the order, you fall back together. Reload. Re-form. Wait. Jack looked around the room. “Make the dead buy every mile.” [VERSE 5 — FOREST FOLK] Sarah pointed toward the rearward slopes. “Forest archers here. Slingers here. They fire above the rifle line.” The old woman nodded. “Spears?” “Behind the gaps. Anything reaches our position, you stop it there.” Della: “My riders?” Jack pointed to both flanks. “Mobile reserve. Anything breaks through, you close it. Anything tries around us, you kill it.” Della smiled. “That I understand.” [VERSE 6 — THE LAST LINE] A sheriff pointed south. “And when we've given up all those lines?” Sarah drew one final mark. Nobody spoke. Jack: “Then we stop moving.” [PAUSE] Behind that line stood Winter Ranch. The wounded. The ammunition. The horses. Everything they had left. Sarah: “By then every survivor stands on the shortest front. Every gun we still have fires from here. Every round we've saved comes here.” Jamie: “And if they're still coming?” Jack looked around the table. “Then nobody needs another plan.” [HARD STOP] [VERSE 7 — ORDERS] The meeting broke near sunset. Sheriffs gathered maps and orders. Captains found their horses. Forest leaders walked north. Della's riders headed west. Jamie joined the rifle companies. Silas lingered by the doorway. Sarah: “Something?” “No.” “You're lying.” “Obviously.” He looked toward the pass. “I just prefer enemies who need feeding.” Sarah: “So do they.” [VERSE 8 — SUNSET] [ARRANGEMENT THINS] The sun sank red behind the ranch. Long shadows crossed the fields. Men rode back toward their regiments. Campfires waited in the distance. Jack and Sarah stood together Watching officers depart. Then— [VERY DISTANT LOW DRUM] BOOM. Nobody moved. [LONG PAUSE] Again. BOOM. Far beyond the northern pass. [VERSE 9 — FIVE MARKS] The old woman turned toward the sound. Della stopped beside her horse. Silas came back through the doorway. Jamie stared north. [DRUM — CLOSER] BOOM. Jack knew that rhythm. They all did. The five marks. First— the cold. Second— the silence. Third— the dead. Fourth— the Riders. [LONG PAUSE] Sarah whispered: “And the fifth?” The old woman watched the last light leave the pass. [DRUM] BOOM. “The drums.” [COMPLETE SILENCE] [OUTRO — FIVE SLOW DISTANT PULSES] BOOM. [PAUSE] BOOM. [PAUSE] BOOM. [PAUSE] BOOM. [LONGER PAUSE] BOOM. The sun disappeared. Across the Seven Counties' army, fires went out one by one. Not from wind. By order. Jack looked north. “Positions.” [ONE LOW RESONATOR NOTE — ♭2→1] [CUT]
