Those Once Bright Dreams (A Hymn To The Sixties)
Souvenirs and photographs What of living ever lasts Maybe only memory and faith Those too soon move past All those years I should have known Time would quickly go away I guess I could have been thinking A lot more about today Good night to the lonely To the angry to the frail To the migrant to the missing To the hungry to the jailed Movements and protests Why did we never become The kind of heroes we swore to be All those days we woke up young It won’t ever be any better Than what we believed it was Years lived in and out of passion Lives content with pointless cause Good night to all the lost And the ones so cruelly cheated To the poor and the unclothed The addicted and mistreated Outfits and attitudes We tried so many things long ago All we thought we could have changed We walked away with nothing left to show Maybe it all ends tomorrow Or within a thousand days But I know it will find its end As our souls are hidden away Good night to the fallen To the broken to the old To the weary to the forsaken To the ones departed long ago Children sweet children Where are those once bright dreams Scattered across a faded horizon With debris from our ether stream
