A Jealous Beast

The heart can be a jealous beast When you remember what you fear Neglecting moments meant to last Adding up the wasted years Words will freeze in an icy pause Then move into a blazing thaw Bonfires of restless contempt Leave sacrifices charred and raw We move through morning habits As we walk across the moon I hear your broken breathing Whispering that this ends soon Hearts become storms That rage into the night Thunder marks the spot Lightning seeks to strike When the wind dies down And the sun starts to shine The damage still remains Where memory stays behind Love forgets the last song played In the dance we do alone If the music skips a single note Rhythms quickly turn to stone What we want is the only choice When we know we cannot bluff The game is over once we know Both of us have bet too much We move through evening habits Leaving footprints on the moon The heart retreats in a fragile rain Humming notes to a familiar tune
