MERCY 025 – The Apprentice | The Mercy

(Verse 1) The young mechanic left his House beneath the winter sky, With a contract in his pocket and a promise to reply. He travelled to the turbine where the frozen rivers turned, To learn the hidden workings of the engines others earned. (Verse 2) The Custodian Order taught him every valve and wire, And showed the failing systems that could freeze without the fire. He held the tools of strangers and the knowledge they would need, While counting down the seasons till he could return and lead. (Chorus) Who owns the knowledge when the lessons have been learned? The teacher who protected it, the House that paid and yearned? The apprentice who carries it through every distant land, Or those who need the power from his trained and careful hand? (Verse 3) The winter came approaching and his promised road was clear, But Custodians barred the gate and told him he must stay here. They said the whole region would fall without the skills he knew, And every broken turbine proved the words they spoke were true. (Verse 4) His family kept the doorway where the empty seasons grew, While distant homes remembered every promise he once knew. The turbine kept on turning, but the question still remained, If saving every stranger meant his freedom was detained. (Chorus) Who owns the knowledge when the lessons have been learned? The teacher who protected it, the House that paid and yearned? The apprentice who carries it through every distant land, Or those who need the power from his trained and careful hand? (Bridge) A skill becomes a burden when the keeper cannot leave, A gift becomes a prison when the giver cannot grieve. The Custodians feared the darkness if the apprentice went away, But holding back the future only taught the debt would stay. (Outro) So still the apprentice listens where the turbine shadows fall, Between the duty owed to one and the duty owed to all. For knowledge is a promise that must travel when it can, And no machine should own the hands that learned to make it stand.
