Let It Get Dark Early
Everybody loves the summer Like it owes them something good All the rooftops, all the parties All the sweating through the mood I keep smiling in the daylight Like I’m happy to be seen But the sun is so demanding And my body feels mean I don’t wanna be dramatic I don’t wanna be a ghost I just miss the kind of weather Where nobody wants to post Let it get dark early Let the cold come in Let me wear a bigger jacket Let me hide inside my skin I want winter in the window I want reasons not to stay When it’s freezing after dinner We can all just go away Summer makes a little theater Out of every open door Everybody wants a body Everybody wants one more One more drink and one more sidewalk One more plan I didn’t mean One more “you should come out later” One more version to be seen I don’t hate the people I just hate the heat I just want an honest season That lets everybody leave Let it get dark early Let the cold come in Let me wear a bigger jacket Let me hide inside my skin I want winter in the window I want reasons not to stay When it’s freezing after dinner We can all just go away I like when breath becomes visible Then disappears again I like when streets get quiet And nobody asks where I’ve been I like rushing home in silence With my hands inside my sleeves I like loving from a distance When the distance lets me breathe Let it get dark early Let the cold come in Let me wear a bigger jacket Let me hide inside my skin I want winter in the window I want reasons not to stay When it’s freezing after dinner We can all just go away Let it get dark early Let me go home clean I don’t want to be lonely I just want to not be seen
