AFTER DARK [Intro — breathy female vocal] I wore black You wore that smile I knew I’d stay a while (Oh, no…) [Verse 1] Silver rings against your glass You lean close, I let you ask “Do you always dress like this?” Only when I’m taking risks There’s a song beneath your words But the bass gets to me first Put my lipstick in your coat Take my hand before I go [Pre-Chorus — rising synths, layered harmonies] I’ve been hard to reach all week Now your heartbeat’s next to me Let the last train leave us here There’s a part you haven’t seen [Chorus — bright, explosive synth drop] I’ve got a soft spot after dark Under the leather, under the guard Give me a reason to open my arms I’ve got a soft spot after dark Oh-oh, don’t let go You make it harder to dance alone Come a little closer, there you are Right in my soft spot after dark (After dark!) [Post-Chorus — vocoder hook] Under my skin (Ah-ah) There you go again (Again!) Under my skin Letting you in, letting you in [Verse 2] Black lace caught around your watch We stand still while people rush You untangle every thread Then you kiss my hand instead Now my friends are heading home Sending hearts onto my phone I say, “Go, I’ll be alright” You look different in this light [Pre-Chorus — airy doubles, building drums] I’ve been hard to reach all week Now your heartbeat’s next to me Let the last train leave us here There’s a part you haven’t seen [Chorus] I’ve got a soft spot after dark Under the leather, under the guard Give me a reason to open my arms I’ve got a soft spot after dark Oh-oh, don’t let go You make it harder to dance alone Come a little closer, there you are Right in my soft spot after dark (After dark!) [Bridge — stripped synths, intimate vocal] When they turn the music down Will you want me just as loud? With my heels held in my hand Will you kiss me there again? No more hiding in the beat Say it standing in the street If you want me, let me know Before the morning takes us home [Final Chorus — octave doubles, full harmonies] I’ve got a soft spot after dark Under the leather, under the guard You gave me a reason to open my arms I’ve got a soft spot after dark Oh-oh, don’t let go (Don’t let go!) You make it harder to dance alone Come a little closer, there you are Right in my soft spot after dark (You’re right where the soft spots are!) [Outro — whispered, fading vocoder] Under my skin There you go again The sun’s coming in… I’m letting you in
