The Rivets Were Fine

+ Show full styles

[Intro] [Upbeat and fast Irish tavern rhythm, cheerful mandolin tremolo and loud accordion] [Verse 1] Every lad in Boston brags about his family tree, But my old granddaddy was as simple as could be. Before he sailed to America, he left his rugged mark, Working down in Belfast, welding iron in the dark! They were building a giant ship, the biggest ever seen, And old Paddy swung the hammer, if you know just what I mean. They called that vessel Titanic, the pride of every town, Too bad my dear granddaddy put the rivets upside down! [Chorus] [Crowd Gang Vocals] Ohhh, my granddaddy built the Titanic! He hammered the rivets, drank his Guinness, causing labor panic! Ohhh, it wasn't our fault that she sank to the sea floor, If they'd given him more whiskey, she'd be sailing still for sure! [Accordion and Mandolin Interlude] [Fast, bouncy and rhythmic] [Verse 2] The foreman yelled: "Hey Paddy, get your ass back to the line!" But granddaddy just grinned and said: "Boss, the ship is fine!" "Don't worry 'bout the iceberg, this steel will last a century!" Then he hid his heavy wrench and ran straight down to the brewery. They say on the launch day, old Paddy drank all night, Shouting: "I did a hell of a job, that boat is built up tight!" Well, she was tight enough, till the iceberg had its say, And we still laugh about his workmanship to this very day! [Bridge] [Tempo changes to a pub-shanty waltz, vocals with a cheeky grin] When the ship went down, granddaddy was in Boston having beer, He read the morning paper and just grinned from ear to ear. He said: "Good thing I got my wages before she left the shore, 'Cause with work like mine aboard her, I'd be sleeping on the ocean floor!" [Chorus] [Maximum energy, fastest punk tempo, crowd shouting along] [Crowd Gang Vocals] Ohhh, my granddaddy built the Titanic! He hammered the rivets, drank his Guinness, causing labor panic! Ohhh, it wasn't our fault that she sank to the sea floor, If they'd given him more whiskey, she'd be sailing still for sure! [Outro] [Crazy fast mandolin solo, heavy boots stomping on the floor] So raise up a glass for the Belfast dock! For the rivets that cracked on that frozen rock! And here's to my granddaddy's legacy, Who's still laughing in Boston, wild and free! [Stop] [All shout] And the iceberg was a lie anyway! HEY! [Ending] [Huge tavern cheer, big drum crash and ringing guitar chord]
