[Verse 1] Got out late with the world on my back Engine fired right up, so I headed east Could've been home in twenty minutes But I wasn't in no hurry to sleep Took Commerce instead of the interstate Passed a place with both doors open Saw an old friend smoking outside He waved me over like the door was left open [Chorus] I took the long way through town Just to see what was still going down Had no reason, had nowhere to be Just figured the night might have something for me I could've gone home, but home ain't moving Tomorrow's gonna come no matter what I'm doing So I'll take the long way through town And let the night keep figuring me out [Verse 2] One joint turned into two and two into three A little two-stepping sounds good to me Somebody's laughing at something stupid Some guy buying another round for everybody Truck's still parked where I left it Keys sitting right there in my hand But the streetlights hit that windshield And I figured I'd stay awhile if I can [Chorus] I took the long way through town Just to see what was still going down Had no reason, had nowhere to be Just figured the night might have something for me I could've gone home, but home ain't moving Tomorrow's gonna come no matter what I'm doing So I'll take the long way through town And let the night keep figuring me out [Bridge] Maybe I'm running from nothing Maybe I'm running toward something Maybe there's no difference tonight Sometimes you don't need an answer You just need another streetlight And somewhere the music sounds right [Verse 3] Now it's getting close to morning The streets ain't half as loud Neon's fading in the windows while the workers are coming out I point my truck south and hit the gas lighting up the nights grass Didn't find what I was looking for But I found a night I didn't want to lose [Final Chorus] I took the long way through town Just to see what was still going down Had no reason, had nowhere to be Just figured the night might have something for me I could've gone home, but home ain't moving Tomorrow's gonna come no matter what I'm doing So I'll take the long way through town Yeah, I'll take the long way through town [Outro] Could've been home hours ago But what's the fun in that? Sometimes the best road you ever take Is the one that takes you back
