The Cursor said Ready

[intro] [Verse 1] The screen came up in Commodore blue and it waited half the night. I copied out a magazine by hand, by desk-lamp light. Ten PRINT, twenty GO TO ten — and a maze came rolling thru. There wasn't anyone to ask, so I broke it till I knew. [Chorus] No disturbing ads, no endless clicking, and nothing in the way: whatever I could think of I could make it in a day. The hum was low and steady and the cursor said READY. [Verse 2] The Amiga swapped disks till dawn and crashed, and called it "Guru", and it painted things in colours that my schoolbooks never drew. The two eighty-six said TURBO but it only slowed it down. Yet, six hundred forty kilobytes were the biggest thing in town. [Chorus] No disturbing ads, no endless clicking, and nothing in the way: whatever I could think of I could make it in a day. The hum was low and steady and the cursor said READY. [Bridge] But somewhere in the middle I got tired and I got old. I bought a box I couldn't open and I did what I was told. Two decades of "give us your money", by the Mac and Windows grey. It never asked me anything. It had nothing left to say. [Verse 3] So I wiped it on a Tuesday, put Linux on the drive, Oh-march-ee by the morning and the whole thing came alive. [Pre-Chorus] There's someone in the terminal who answers when I ask. I still break it till I know — it's just a shorter task. [Chorus] No disturbing ads, no endless clicking, and nothing in the way: whatever I can think of I can make it in a day. The hum is low and steady and the cursor says READY. [instrumental break] mhm, hmm (Oh-march-ee) mhm, hmm (Oh-march-ee) [Outro] yes nothing is in the way: whatever I can think of I can make it in a day. 'cause the cursor is READY.
