[Verse 1] Water in calm On a smothered river Branches lean over Like they’re trying to listen Your old red jacket Folded on the pier Steam in your hands Coffee And a quiet year [Chorus] Smothered river Holding everything still All the words we never said Float where the reeds bend at will You trace circles On the surface of my sleeve Smothered river Smother this leaving Till I forget why I should leave [Verse 2] Rust on the ladder Where we used to dive Now it just waits there For some other lives You say “It’s getting colder” But you don’t stand up I taste the metal Of your name on my tongue [Chorus] Smothered river Holding everything still All the words we never said Float where the reeds bend at will You trace circles On the surface of my sleeve Smothered river Smother this leaving Till I forget why I should leave [Bridge] If we stay till the fog burns off Will the banks give us back our sound? Or are we just stones in the mud Sinking slow Too proud to drown? [Chorus] Smothered river Holding everything still All the plans we almost made Drift where the light hits the silt You breathe softly Like you’re trying to believe Smothered river Smother this leaving Till there’s nowhere left to leave
