Granny's Rabbit Stew (Fast)

[Intro] [bright acoustic guitar strumming, banjo rolls enter] [Verse 1] Up on the ridge where the good soil lies, Granny’s garden’s bloomin’ under clear blue skies. Beans climbin’ high, taters fat and round, Maters redder than the sun goin’ down. She hoes and hums, proud as can be, This season’s bounty’s growin’ fine and free. [Verse 2] A week goes by and the rows look fine, Carrots pushin’ up in a straight green line. But mornin’ comes and somethin’s wrong, Tops chewed off where they don’t belong. Little prints in the dirt, messy and wide, Granny squints and mutters, “Who done this ride?” [Chorus] Oh, I'm gonna cook up a rabbit stew And one giant rabbit will more than do Gonna stew him up good till the pot’s boilin’ hot That giant rabbit’s gonna hit the spot! [Verse 3] She creeps to the edge at the break of day, Sees that giant rabbit hoppin’ her way. Eatin’ carrots whole, not a care in sight, Leavin’ half the patch a sorry sight. He don’t share a bite, just chews and spits, Granny’s blood starts boilin’ — that’s it! [Verse 4] Granny don’t mind sharin’ with a critter small, A bite for the birds, a nibble and all. But this big ol’ rabbit’s greedy and mean, Tares up the rows and leaves nothin’ clean. He don’t eat what he breaks, just wastes what he takes, Granny’s had enough — that rabbit’s fate’s at stake! [Chorus] Oh, I'm gonna cook up a rabbit stew And one giant rabbit will more than do Gonna stew him up good till the pot’s boilin’ hot That giant rabbit’s gonna hit the spot! [Verse 5] She sets a snare by the carrot row, Baited with greens where the big fella’ll go. Next mornin’ she finds him caught good and tight, Kickin’ and hoppin’ in the soft morning light. Granny grabs her hoe, gives a satisfied grin, “Time to pay for the mess you’ve been in.” [Verse 6] She hauls him to the cabin, pot already hot, Stew bubblin’ strong, smells good as it ought. No more thievin’ critters, no more broken rows, She smiles at the ridge — victory shows. She hums a little tune while the aroma thickens, Content on her mountain — that's the trick, it is. [Final Chorus – big finish, repeat last line] Oh, I'm gonna cook up a rabbit stew And one giant rabbit will more than do Gonna stew him up good till the pot’s boilin’ hot That giant rabbit’s gonna hit the spot! (That giant rabbit’s gonna hit the spot!) [Outro] [fiddle flourish, final acoustic guitar strum]
