Outside the Ark

We laughed at the hammer, year after year Called him a fool for the boat on the hill Then the sky went the color of fear And the door swung shut, and the world went still Outside the ark, where the rest of us fell I was never the one that the story would tell No line in the book for the ones swept away Just rain, and the dark, and the end of the day Outside the ark Outside the ark No smoke rose up from anyone's hearth that night Just water climbing the walls, and we were alone We held each other and prayed for a light But the sky had already made up its own Outside the ark, where the rest of us fell I was never the one that the story would tell No line in the book for the ones swept away Just rain, and the dark, and the end of the day Outside the ark Outside the ark I held her close as the water climbed too high Hummed an old song so she wouldn't have to cry Somewhere that boat rides safe on a sea we'll never see And no one left to remember there was a we Outside the ark, where the rest of us fell I was never the one that the story would tell No line in the book for the ones swept away Just rain, and the dark, and the end of the day Outside the ark Outside the ark, but we were here Outside the ark We were here Outside the ark
