We've had a season without rain, And watched the thirsty earth grow dry. We've seen the clouds roll overhead, But all they do is pass us by. But those who built this town long ago Knew dry seasons would come around. So they dug their wells deep in the earth, Where precious water could be found. Sometimes in our spiritual journey, We let the Spirit slip away. A hurt we haven't quite forgiven, A prayer we didn't take time to say. A question that we let plant doubt, Letting our worship become routine. And slowly, almost without noticing, Our souls begin to lose their vibrant green. The wells our fathers dug so deep Sustain us through the thirsty years. The foundation of faith we've built within Can carry us when the Spirit feels less near. But wells were never meant to take The place of rain from clouds above. And faith we've built through all our years Should not replace our daily walk in His love. Oh, how beautiful the rain, When you've known the thirsty ground. How sweet the Spirit feels When your heart turns back around. He's always waiting there, Even when hearts have turned away. Just open up your soul To the blessing of the rain. I can't command the clouds to rain, Or make the rivers flow. I can't control the seasons, Or tell the winds where to go. But when my soul grows thirsty, There's a choice that I can make. If I turn my heart back toward Him, I'll find the love that always waits. And now I hear the falling rain, So welcome after thirsty days. The earth is drinking in each drop, And my heart is filled with praise. I used to take the rain for granted, Till I learned how dry life could be. Now every drop reminds my heart What His Spirit means to me. Oh, how beautiful the rain, When you've known the thirsty ground. How sweet the Spirit feels, When His love again is found. The drought can teach you gratitude In a deeper, sweeter way. You don't have to wait on heaven— You can turn to Him today. You cannot make the rain clouds gather, Or choose when showers start. But you can always turn toward heaven, And open up your heart. Oh, how beautiful the rain is... Especially after a drought.
