Watch What You Say
[Intro|Spoken|Low Pulse] They call it a greeting. They call it a phrase. I hear a program You repeat throughout the day. Listen to the words. Listen to what they suggest. [Verse 1] You say "good morning" as you leave your bed; Hear "mourning" underneath the word instead. Like you're grieving for a day you haven't tried, Saying goodbye to another piece of your life. You say you're "awake"; there's a "wake" for the dead. Two different meanings, one sound in your head. That's how I hear the spell begin: You call it a beginning; it sounds like an end. [Verse 2] You call it a "weekday"; hear "weak" in the name. Five days worn down, then you do it again. You wait for the "weekend"; hear "weakened" instead, Too tired to live when you get out of bed. You say "my occupation" when they ask what you do; Now ask how much of your life it occupies too. Your hours, your thoughts, what you dream when you sleep: You call it your job, but what do you keep? [Pre-Chorus] They taught you to spell before you could choose. Now "spelling" and "spells" are the words that you use. I hear the same message; repetition's the key: Say it till it sounds like how life has to be. [Chorus] Watch what you say, hear what it means. What are you telling yourself to believe? "I'm weak, I'm trapped, there's nothing to do." How many times has that spoken for you? Call it a curse, call it a program; You say the words till you think, "That's who I am." Worn out, shut down, too tired to resist: That's where the ones selling fear want you to sit. [Verse 3] You say "there's a deadline"; hear "dead" and "line." A date on a page starts to sound like a threat. Your shoulders get tight; you can't settle your mind. You haven't been late, but you're frightened already. You say "I signed a contract"; "contract" means shrink, When you use it another way: stop and think. If you sign every hour for somebody's plan, What room have you left for the person you are? [Verse 4] You say "I'm fine" when you're barely holding on. What you mean is "don't ask me what's wrong." You say "no worries" when the worry won't stop. What you mean is "I'll hide it; I won't bring it up." "It is what it is" when you've had enough: "I won't try to change it; I'll just shut up." Those are the phrases that silence your needs, Till even you forget you're allowed to speak. [Verse 5] You say "break a leg" when you mean "do well." Hear the injury hiding in the wish itself. You say "bless you"; the old fear says Something might happen when you take that breath. You say "goodbye," and you mean "take care," But I hear the loss in the empty air. The warning is simple: know what you intend; Don't let fear write the words you give your friends. [Verse 6] Look at your calendar, every little square: Another appointment, another "be there." You say "I'm booked"; hear "my time isn't mine." You say "I'm behind" like you're losing a race. Sunday is sunlight, but you dread what comes next. Monday is moonlight turned into a desk. Tuesday is fighting through somebody's list. By Wednesday you're talking, but none of it's this: [Bridge|Spoken|Building] "What do I want? How do I feel?" Thursday: make their bigger numbers real. Friday: buy a little freedom tonight. Saturday: chores, bills, run out of time. Seven different names, but the same routine: Work, spend, recover, repeat. That's the weekly spell I hear. That's the meaning underneath. [Final Chorus|Full Voice] Watch what you say, choose what you mean. Don't turn a habit into your identity. "I'm tired" doesn't have to mean "I'm through." "I'm hurting" means there's something I need to do. Call it a curse, call it a program; I can stop repeating "That's just who I am." If fear is the product they want me to buy, I won't do the selling inside my own mind. [Outro|Spoken|Clear Ending] When I say good morning, I mean a new day. When I need help, that's what I'll say. My time has value. My voice does too. I choose the meaning. I choose what I do.
