10 Music of Molecules / Which Came First: Proteins or Genes?

The genetic code tells us how to arrange the twenty amino acids into proteins. Yet to create genes themselves, complex enzymes made of proteins are required. DNA is replicated by DNA polymerase (a protein), RNA is transcribed by RNA polymerase, proteins are translated by ribosomes, and cell membranes are synthesized by lipid-synthesizing enzymes (also proteins). So which came first — the egg or the chicken? The question remains unresolved. There are multiple hypotheses: • The protein-first hypothesis, such as the GADV theory, which suggests life began with amino acids abundant on the primitive Earth — glycine, alanine, aspartic acid, and valine. • The gene-first hypothesis, represented by the RNA World theory, which proposes that life began with ribozymes — RNA molecules capable of catalysis and self-replication. • The ribosome-first hypothesis, positing that complexes of RNA and proteins were the starting point. • Or perhaps proteins, RNA, ribosomes, and cell membranes co-evolved together.
