[FX: cassette eject • vinyl scratch • audience chatter • someone drops popcorn • microphone feedback • slow sarcastic applause] [MARA] [Tone: fake customer service voice • dripping sarcasm] [SX: exaggerated sigh • clipboard snap] (Record scratch) “Oh… We’re back. Congratulations. You survived… the character limit. Please accept this complimentary emotional inconvenience. I was this close to winning my case before the internet rudely interrupted me. Did everybody stretch? Get a snack? Question their life choices? Fantastic. Court is back in session. And as always… The prosecution has so much more evidence.” [FX: GAVEL CRACK! • filing cabinet drawers SLAM • warped carnival organ swells • crowd chants: “CASE! FILES! CASE! FILES!”] (BEAT SLAMS BACK IN) ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ (FINAL HEARING) [MARA] [Tone: relentless • prosecutor] [SX: folders thrown across courtroom • heels clicking] (Flipping through pages) Exhibit Three-Hundred-Two… Garfield’s bowl still sitting where you left it, dust collecting slow while every heartbeat keeps replaying every second. Exhibit Four-Eighty-Eight… You cried till sunrise, every tear another witness saying grief still owns the house at night. Exhibit Six-Twelve… Blue flare pants, hands shaking, Fourth of July with your whole damn stomach breaking. Tell this jury that was courage… Go ahead… I’ll wait… (heels clacking) Because from where I’m standing, it looked exactly like another panic attack dressed up for a date. [DANIELLE] [Tone: calm… then rising] [SX: chair slides back • slow inhale] (Exhale) You always stop the story halfway through because endings never fit your theory. Yeah, I threw up… Then I drove. Yeah, I shook… Then I showed. Yeah, I needed somebody on the phone… Then I walked inside on my own. You keep framing fear like failure, every chapter reads the same. I kept walking through the fire… You just memorized the flames. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ [FX: fireworks exploding • thunder rolling • rain begins • heartbeat steady] [MARA] [Tone: louder • frustrated] [SX: paper tearing • distorted laughter] Fine! One good night! One lucky break! Don’t act like that rewrites every heartbreak! People leave! Promises bend! You’ve got the receipts—I helped you file them! Every scar… Every lie… Every goodbye… Every time somebody looked away while you stood there asking why! You call me cruel? I call me prepared! [DANIELLE] [Tone: fierce • unwavering] [SX: footsteps echo forward] Prepared? No… You’re terrified. You’ve been standing guard so long you forgot what daylight looks like. Every stranger becomes a suspect. Every silence becomes a sentence. Every smile gets cross-examined before it even reaches the witness. You don’t trust happiness… Because happiness wasn’t allowed to stay when we were little. I get it. I really do. But you’re still protecting a little girl… And she’s not the one standing here anymore. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ [FX: heartbeat slows • carnival organ softens • filing cabinet drawer creaks open] [MARA] [Tone: quieter • defensive] [SX: pages rustling] … If I stop… Who’s gonna watch? Who’s gonna hear the footsteps? Who’s gonna catch the lie before it lands? Who’s gonna make sure nobody ever blindsides us again? [DANIELLE] [Tone: gentle • emotional] [SX: filing cabinet slowly closes] Maybe… Nobody can promise that. People will still disappoint me sometimes. Plans will still fall through. Grief will still visit. Storms will still come. But I don’t need to spend every sunny day rehearsing for the next hurricane. You taught me how to survive. Now… I’m trying to learn how to live. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ (FINAL VERDICT) [FX: crowd silent • one heartbeat • distant fireworks finale • gavel lifts] [MARA] [Tone: barely above a whisper] … What if I don’t know how? [Long silence.] [DANIELLE] [Tone: warm • steady] Then… Stay. Walk beside me. Argue with me. Roll your eyes. Complain. Be sarcastic. Be dramatic. But… You don’t get to hold the gavel anymore. You don’t get to write the verdict… Before life even has a chance to testify. [FX: GAVEL gently placed on the bench • filing cabinet locks with a soft CLICK • fireworks bloom overhead • heartbeat calm] [MARA] [Tone: quiet… almost amused] … I’m still going to complain. [DANIELLE] [Small laugh.] I know. … But this time… I’m driving. (Car revs) [FX: car engine starts • rain fades • fireworks echo in the distance • one final deep breath… silence.]
