Use sustained ] [Verse 0] Witch’s cat beyond all mortal law, for him the tide of time will flaw. He twitches his BLACK ear as clock chimes. He rests upon the red-haired witch’s lap. Till first night’s star breaks dusk’s embrace. Each time the sun has slipped away, he walks from forest to hamlet gray. The dogs take flight with howls of fright, when living shadow comes in sight. People step aside in fear, calling him Phantasm far and near. He climbs the ancient roof to stay, greeting the new day. [Verse 1] I’m black as coal in shadowed mines, unseen where silence shines. My eyes of tar flare with fire. I’ve lived through lives beyond the count, in ninth and final I still mount. Death skirts around me, fears my spot, for I’m the witch’s feline wraith. One mischievous cat, white-eared, slightly lame, waits for me each evening near the hamlet flat. He cares not for the witch, nor fame. He purrs like a tailed tractor’s hum beside me in the night. I long for that small heart of gold, to hear him purr at dawn’s first light. [Verse 2] White-eared lad, not more than three months old, was thrown in an alleyway, eyes unopened. With my own teeth I tore his life and gave him freedom. Defending him from packs of stray dogs, I fought. I visit him when night descends, the witch brews potions. Since then he’s grown and gained strength, can snatch a sausage on his own, finds his food and night’s repose, drives away the dogs alone. Once in a fight he hurt his paw, losing eight of his nine lives. [Verse 3] I wish to live forever so, from hunting chase to evening glow, yet life abhors stability. Whatever dreams you hold in mind, will turn to reverse in end, once instincts sleep, human or feline, fate swings its axe to rend. I heard his pain within my heart & ran. White-eared lay silent, breath by breath, as time drained to the ground, spilled from wounds left by stray dogs. He lay forgotten, the last ninth life bears a scar, a tale of sorrow etched in fur. [Verse 4] I sat in hopeless shadow, ready for whatever came, just to meet the golden dawn with him, our morning flame. A sudden shade fell on me, I shivered at the touch, the witch’s voice pierced the night. She spoke of gifts, of balance deep, of forces dark and wide, and how she’d grant the kitten’s final chance, his fate to now decide. Yet Death won’t tolerate a prey denied, and only one of us must stay alive. [Verse 5] Witch’s cat beyond all mortal law, for him the tide of time will flaw. He twitches his WHITE ear alone, as clock chimes. He rests upon the red-haired witch’s lap. Till first night’s star breaks dusk’s embrace. Each time the sun has slipped away, he walks from forest all alone. The dogs take flight with howls of fright, when limping shadow comes in sight. People step aside in fear, calling him Phantasm far and near. He climbs the ancient roof to stay, greeting the new day.
