When Is Enough
My Story Before the Song My fight with cancer began in 2006, when I was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. Surgery followed, and they removed the middle lobe of my right lung. I was young. I thought I had won. I went back to life - working, traveling, laughing. I still had my dream job. But cancer didn’t end. In 2010, it came back. Another tumor, another surgery. This time they removed the lower lobe of the right lung. A post-surgery complication almost killed me - chylothorax. I needed emergency surgery to survive. I did. In 2013, cancer returned again. Same lung. Another surgery, followed by stereotactic radiation. 2015: relapse number four. This time, it had spread to my left lung. Still only in the lungs. No metastases elsewhere - just the lungs. Again: stereotactic radiation. 2016: relapse number five. Both lungs this time. More stereotactic radiation. 2018: relapse number six. Right lung again. More radiation. In October 2019, they removed what remained of my right lung. A pneumonectomy. A high-risk surgery. I survived that too. Slowly - painfully - I came back. 2020–2021: another relapse. New tumors growing in the left lung. In December 2020 and January 2021, I had more stereotactic radiation. I quit my job after 20 years. Not because I gave up, but because I wanted to live. I wanted to sing. I never asked for disability support. I made it on my own - until today. March 2023: I began immunotherapy (Ipilimumab and Nivolumab). The side effects were brutal. The result? Nothing. The cancer kept growing. Late 2023: I underwent a risky biopsy. They removed part of a tumor in my only remaining lung. I lost more lung tissue. Breathing became harder. The results confirmed it once again: adenocarcinoma of the lung, with the KRAS G12D mutation. January–April 2024: chemo (Pemetrexed & Carboplatin). No effect. February–April 2025: another chemo (Vinorelbine). Again, no effect. I now live with just 28% lung capacity. Multiple tumors are rooted deep in my left lung. My right lung is gone since 2019. Another standard chemo was offered: Docetaxel. I said no. What’s a few more weeks worth, if it means less of me? Then came something different. In April 2025, I learned that a clinical trial targeting my specific KRAS G12D mutation had finally arrived in Europe - Belgium, France, Italy, Spain. Until now, there has been no targeted treatment for this mutation. If it were KRAS G12C, I’d already have medication. My oncologist reached out. But nothing came back. Access isn’t simple - especially from Switzerland. It would be my first-ever targeted therapy. Maybe my last chance. But it’s also a Phase 1 trial - unknown outcomes, unknown side effects. A chance at healing. Or a faster goodbye. So now I ask the question that’s been circling in my chest: When is enough? Not from fear. Not from surrender. But from truth. This community here on Suno - your comments, your music, your hearts, your prayers - has carried me farther than I thought I could go. I live in love, despite it all. I still believe music can heal. That love holds us up. I have no physical pain. Just breathlessness. I can’t fly anymore. I can’t run. But I live and I am happy. And I’ve emptied my soul into songs. There is space now - for light. For peace. For love. If the study somewhere in Europe opens its door for me - so be it. If not - I’m still at peace. The doctors have stopped predicting. They say it’s a wonder I’m still here - a quiet defiance of their charts and numbers. Weeks? Months? No promises. No deadlines. Time has become a silent companion. Just breath, borrowed and real. This song is my way of asking: When is enough? And if my path leads into the light - then so be it. But until that day: I still believe, I still belong This life is mine, and I live it strong Not counting days, just making them true As long as it takes - I’ll see it through. 🌒🕯️🌘 🕯️ 🌒🕯️🌘 They always say you’re strong But what if I don’t want to be What if I just want peace In '06, they took a piece of me Called it a win, said I was free I lived, I worked, I laughed again Until the scan betrayed my span They cut me once, they cut me twice Then took a whole side of my life A plastic box was filled with white They said: You almost died that night I walked slower, but I walked proud Never let the silence cry out loud My will stayed firm though lungs were bruised Each breath I take says I still choose Each time I rose, the blow came fast But I endured, I would not pass Left side burned, then right in turn Then both once more, with scars to learn They said this one might work But nothing ever stayed I’ve lived in white rooms More than I’ve lived in days When is enough Is it when I stop trying When I stop chasing silence When I stop hiding pain When is enough Is it giving up or letting go Do I take one last shot or just go home When is enough They say there's hope - but only then After chemo six, again A chance to try, but not to choose A poisoned path I know I’ll lose I’m still here, I still decide Not less alive - just dignified It’s not the drug, it’s what it costs A little time, or all that’s lost Some walk beside me, some just stay In thoughts that light the hardest day There’s no clear line, no steady shore But love still knocks at every door When is enough Is it when hope won’t answer When the doctors just suggest The same old cancer dancer When is enough Is it courage or surrender now If I rest, do I lose or finally allow That this is enough I never gave up I stitched each wound I kissed each scan Even when it burned through But now I stand Not at a crossroad Just a thin line With no map to hold Do I spend what's left On calls and closed doors Or walk with the time That might still be mine When is enough Is it quitting or choosing Is it failing or freeing Is it falling or moving When is enough Can someone tell me how to know When to fight And when to go When is… enough I'm still here - not less, not gone The light is faint, but I live it strong No finish line, no final song Just breath and choice - and moving on I still believe, I still belong This life is mine, and I live it strong Not counting days, just making them true As long as it takes - I'll see it through ✒️✒️✒️✒️✒️✒️ Lyrics and text © 2025 Thousand Tomorrows.
