Calm Down Sir

Excuse me, officer, what did I do? I know you’re on the job when you’re dressed in blue. Staring me down like you’ve got something on me, Mate, just let me carry on, stop puffing your chest at me. Is it the badge that makes you think you’ve got the right, To pick out a victim and start up a fight? I’m sitting here answering every question you ask, But you’re getting uptight while I’m trying to relax. Not surprised you’ve already called for backup, I’m calm as can be, you’re the one worked up. “Now sir, tell me exactly what happened tonight.” Soon as I start talking, you change the direction outright. You interrupt my words before they’ve even begun, Already made your judgement before anyone’s won. Then you look me in the eye with authority’s stare, Like you walked in deciding I was guilty right there. “Calm down, sir…” that’s all I hear. Funny thing is, I’m the calm one here. You woke me up and dragged me outside, Now you’re telling me how I should act tonight. “Calm down, sir…” over again… I already know exactly where this ends. “Calm down, sir…” that’s all they say. Push you to the edge, then lock you away. Twist your words, write their report, Leave you standing in a broken court. “Calm down, sir…” here we go again. Like they already know how this story ends. Serve and protect… that’s what they preach. Funny how justice stays just out of reach. My temper starts rising, they know where to strike. Push every button till somebody bites. One bad decision, now the whole world’s changed. Adrenaline pumping, everything deranged. Next thing I know I’m down on the ground, Hands in the cuffs while they’re swarming around. Pepper spray burning, can’t open my eyes, Trying to work out where the truth really lies. Thrown in the wagon, can’t see where I stand, Every bump in the road, shaking cuffs on my hands. Locked in a cell while they write their reports, Turning one story into something they distort. Adding the charges and ticking each box, While I’m sitting alone behind concrete blocks. Not every badge wears the same face. Some earn respect through honesty and grace. But power without purpose is dangerous ground, When nobody listens and truth can’t be found. Respect is a two-way street, that’s how it’s meant to be, Not built on fear or forced authority. If you’re here to protect, then protect us all, Not wait for the moment somebody falls. “Calm down, sir…” that’s all they say. Push you to the edge, then lock you away. Twist your words, write their report, Leave you standing in a broken court. “Calm down, sir…” echoes in my head. Long after the courtroom, long after what’s said. Serve and protect… that’s what they preach. Funny how justice stays just out of reach. Excuse me, officer… before you judge me today… Maybe listen to the words I’ve got to say. Respect goes both ways, that’s all I’m asking for. ‘Cause we’re all just people… before the uniform.
