The Letter I’ll never Send - Jason Myers
[Verse 1 – gentle, confessional tone] Hey… I don’t know if you’d even read this now, Guess it doesn’t really matter anyhow. When your name lights up my phone, It feels familiar, but not like home. I still set too many plates from habit, Still watch those shows I never liked. I’ve been fine, yeah, I say that a lot, But Im not always sure that’s right. [Pre-Chorus] Maybe I just needed time, Or maybe love just crossed a line… Lines that blurred too many times [Chorus] This is the letter I won’t send, Where I tell you what I’d never mend. Where I thank you for the mess we made, And forgive us both for walkin’ away. You’ll never read these words I penned — Because, This is the letter I won’t send. [Verse 2 – frustration and grief rising] I still blame you when I lay awake Then blame myself when I catch my mistake. I wanted peace, you wanted proof, Facts can be used to build any truth. We said forever, in between the fights, But love alone don’t make that right. I held on tight, you held your breath, We loved too hard, ignored the rest. [Pre-Chorus] And I get it now, I understand, We were tryin’ more than we planned. [Chorus – deeper, regretful but freeing] This is the letter I won’t send, The one that says I’d do it again. I’d still break just to end up here, I’d rerun the loss to keep what’s left near. You’ll never read these words I penned — This is the letter I won’t send. [Bridge – spoken/sung, trembling voice] I don’t hate you, No! - I never could, I just wish you focussed more on good. You crossed my mind the other day, And it didn’t hurt — just felt far away. So if somehow you ever wonder, If I cared — yeah!, I did… I still do! But this letter’s better left in the drawer, ‘Cause I’ve got nothin’ left to prove. I know what’s true. And how truth lands different for me than you. [Final Chorus – stripped, closing the letter] This is the letter I won’t send, There’s NO! “I miss you,” and NO! “let’s try again.” I wrote it down so it could end, So it could end . Yeah, this is the letter I won’t send. [Outro – soft spoken, almost a whisper] Guess some things are better said, Only once, inside your head. Goodbye for real, Goodbye - my old best friend — That’s all there is, all there is to be heard... This is the the last song - my final word.
