If I were to write a spaghetti western... it wouldn't be about two men facing off in the street. Where's the drama in that? Two guns. Two egos. Some dust. We've seen it. No. I'd put a man at one end... a woman at the other. Neither one reaches for the gun. Now you've got a story. High noon hanging over one empty street. His boots stop there. Mine stop here. Nobody retreats. He tips his hat. I raise one brow. That's all. Somehow shots have already been fired. Bartender's polishing the same damn glass. Undertaker looks annoyed. Nobody's dead. Nobody's bleeding. Poor bastard's practically unemployed. [Small distant whistle] Whole town's watching. We don't notice. Obviously. One little clue. Then one more. Leave another by the saloon door. Don't say why. Don't say please. That's subtle. Real subtle. Jesus. Subtlety, you subtle tease, one step closer, two steps leave. No shots fired, no casualties, just two damn fools and subtlety. Say it sideways. Let it breathe. Hide the answer up your sleeve. Whole damn town knows what we won't concede. Subtlety... you subtle tease. He leaves a message casual as hell, buried beneath a dozen details I know too well. No name. Smart. No proof. Better. Just enough smoke to blame the weather. I leave one back. Tiny thing. Barely noticeable. Except perhaps from space. That's subtle. Real subtle. You wanna fire that thing into the air next time so nobody notices? He knows I know. I know he knows. Neither one says it. That's how it goes. Hands stay clean. Sleeves stay neat. Meanwhile there's gunpowder all over the street. Subtlety, you subtle tease, one step closer, two steps leave. No shots fired, no casualties, just two damn fools and subtlety. Call it fiction. Call it art. Call it random from the start. Whole damn town knows what we won't concede. Subtlety... you subtle tease. There is a point where subtlety becomes plausible deniability in a ten-gallon hat. And I respect that. Deeply. Because nothing says "I didn't say anything" quite like leaving enough clues to require a map, a compass, and three mildly concerned townspeople. Still... nobody drew. That's important. Eventually the sun drops low. Town clears out. Bartender goes home. Undertaker too. Disappointed. And there we stand, still innocent, still absolutely not doing this. So I wrote it all down. Moved it out West. Changed a few details. You know the rest. No names. No proof. Nothing anyone could see. Just four minutes of evidence set conveniently to a melody. Shit. Subtlety, you subtle tease, one step closer, two steps leave. No shots fired. No casualties. Just two damn fools and subtlety. He didn't say it. Neither did she. That's the story. Technically. Technically... Subtlety... sweet subtlety... Apparently... we're both terrible at this.
