She turned toward Scorti, a playful gleam in her eye. “I hope you’re ready, my love. I’ve arranged a royal welcome.” Scorti raised a perfectly arched brow. “Let me guess. Another princess?” Helena grinned. “Technically yes. Akiko. French by birth, but princess by marriage. She's fluent in Japanese and will be our translator.” Scorti leaned back, mock-exasperated. “We’re never just two, are we?” Helena chuckled. “She’s here just for the step. The adventure’s still ours. And anyway, think of it as practice, we’ll have to get used to people adoring us.” Scorti smirked. “We already do.” Outside the airport in Sapporo, a soft winter breeze welcomed them. Akiko was waiting in a long coat with intricate red stitching, next to a woman with solemn eyes and a round, radiant face. “Helena!” Akiko ran forward and embraced her. “Still alive, I see.” “I try,” Helena laughed, then Akiko turned to the woman. “Scorti, meet Tukara. It means ‘Moon’ in Ainu.” Scorti nodded, offering a warm, curious smile. Akiko leaned closer, whispering conspiratorially, “I’ve heard of you. Helena talks about you often.” Scorti cocked her head. “In flattering terms, I hope?” Helena nudged her playfully. “Only told her you have a terrible temper.” She kissed Scorti's cheek and murmured at her ear. “She knows how much I love you. The rest is our secret.” They rode in silence for a time through icy forests, until the trees gave way to a clearing where traditional wooden houses stood, modest yet imbued with dignity. Smoke curled into the sky, carrying scents of cedar and something earthy. “This is Nibutani,” Tukara said softly. “A small Ainu village.” Helena's eyes lit up. “It feels like a sacred pause between the trees.” Tukara nodded. “We build near rivers and forests. The kamuy, the spirits, live in all things. If we are kind, they speak back.” That evening, around a fire, the four of them sat on thick pelts. The fire crackled like old stories being remembered. Conversation bloomed. “Where do your people live?” Scorti asked. Tukara answered, “Mainly here, in Hokkaidō. But before… we lived even on Sakhalin and the Kuriles. The Japanese call us Ainu, it means ‘human’. Simple.” Akiko translated with fluid grace, sipping hot tea. Helena turned to her. “You’ve truly settled here, haven’t you?” “I have new projects,” Akiko said with a mysterious smile. Helena narrowed her eyes, smirking. “Seventy or eighty percent cacao?” Akiko burst out laughing. “Eighty-five. Bitter and refined.” Scorti added dryly, “Just like you.” As Tukara explained, the Ainu lived through hunting and fishing. The men wore embroidered robes and revered their beards. The women once bore sacred tattoos near their mouths, a rite of passage silenced by Japanese law. “We raise bear cubs,” Tukara said calmly. “Then set them free, to return to the gods in ceremony. It’s not cruelty, it’s gratitude.” Scorti blinked. “That’s… beautiful. And hard.” “Yes,” Tukara said simply. “All true things are.” They spoke of the iomante, of foxes being messengers and owls protectors. Every river had a name, every tree a whisper. Helena and Scorti listened with reverence. “When we catch salmon,” Tukara said, “we thank it aloud. If we forget, the river might not give again.” Scorti leaned forward. “And you believe the spirits hear?” Tukara smiled. “It’s not about belief. It’s about remembering.” That night, under a dark sky peppered with stars, Helena leaned against Scorti beside the fire. “We’re always learning,” she whispered. “Even when we think we’re only walking.” The next morning was music. Helena sang in old Norse modes; Scorti responded in Romanian melodies laced with fire. Tukara answered with Ainu throat chants, joined by Akiko’s quiet harmonies. They laughed between verses, teasing each other’s accents and clapping out rhythms on carved wooden drums. They stayed several days, exchanging not just words, but laughter, memory, and care. When they finally left, it wasn’t a goodbye, it was the continuation of a song still echoing in their bones. As they walked down the narrow forest path, Scorti took Helena’s hand. “No more princesses after this?” Helena winked. “Only you, my angel. Only you.” 💙🤍💙🤍💙💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍💙🤍 Ape kamuy ni uk, somo ran mura Upaskuma wen kamuy inkar Iyomante e uske, rametok ki Urespa itak kamuy hoski We met beneath the cedar sky Our tongues were braided by wind and fire You showed me where the spirits sleep And I brought stories from distant peaks No walls stood between our breath Just flame, just truth, and earth beneath Iyomante irankarapte!
