Wearing What Fell (I8 csv2.1)
[Intro: unaccompanied solo violin, distant room tone, one pointe shoe tapping stone] [Verse 1: violin continues, felt damped grand piano enters underneath, sparse] They stripped the seats out aisle by aisle, Then the doors, then the names on the doors, Then the sky came in through the top of the room And nobody came back to shut it. [Verse 2: low cellos enter in unison, orchestral harp answers the violin] I did not put this dress on, The building handed it down, Every thread of it used to be ceiling, Every torn edge of it used to be paint. [Chorus: full chamber ensemble enters in three four waltz lift, distant French horn answers the vocal, reverb opens upward with no ceiling return] So I am wearing what fell, I am wearing the whole long night, One arm up where the light turns, One arm back where the people were, And I have not stopped counting three Since the last time anyone clapped. [Verse 3: pull back to violin, piano, and a low bowed double bass drone] The stone under me is not a floor, It is what a floor turns into, And a foot that was trained for a stage Will hold on anything if you ask it. [Bridge: strip to voice and one sustained cello, hushed and unornamented, no vibrato, still sung, plaster grit falling faintly behind] The sky up there does not know my name, It was never going to. That is not the reason I am still here. I am still here because something has to keep this room in motion, And I am the only thing left in it that moves. [Final Chorus: full ensemble returns one dynamic level louder, single wordless soprano line high above the melody, used once] So I am wearing what fell, I am wearing the whole long night, One arm up where the light turns, One arm back where the people were, And whatever came down on this place, I am still handing something back. [Outro: instruments drop away one at a time, ending on solo violin, then the pointe shoe on stone, then silence] Every thread of it used to be ceiling. [End]
