[Verse 1] I found your keychain In the cereal bowl A tiny blue fish And a bent-up goal Three house keys clinked Like spoons in a jar I stood there laughing In my work shoes, by far [Pre-Chorus] You left a note On the fridge door too Said "if I lose it all" I'll still come back to you My thumb found the nick On the metal ring And the whole room tilted Like it knew that thing [Chorus] Hold on to the small thing Hold on to the small thing That little blue fish Keeps swimming with me Hold on to the small thing Hold on to the small thing If the day falls apart We still got a key [Verse 2] I put it in my coat With a busted zipper Next to a receipt And a peppermint wrapper At the stoplight It tapped my knee Like, don't be so sure You can outrun me You said "come home" With a crooked grin And I heard that sound When the keys slid in [Pre-Chorus] You left a note On the fridge door too Said "if I lose it all" I'll still come back to you My thumb found the nick On the metal ring And the whole room tilted Like it knew that thing [Chorus] Hold on to the small thing Hold on to the small thing That little blue fish Keeps swimming with me Hold on to the small thing Hold on to the small thing If the day falls apart We still got a key [Bridge] One day I'll lose The name of this town But not that blue fish Or the sound it made When you laughed in the hall And the drawer got stuck And the whole wide mess Still felt like luck [Final Chorus] Hold on to the small thing Hold on to the small thing That little blue fish Keeps swimming with me Hold on to the small thing Hold on to the small thing If the day falls apart We still got a key Hold on to the small thing (hold on) Hold on to the small thing (and come back) That little blue fish Keeps swimming with me
