In Whose Image Is It Really?

[Spoken Intro] Genesis says... God made man in His image. Humanity was deeply honored. So naturally... we returned the favor. [Verse 1] We gave Him our opinions Our enemies and friends Explained which kinds of people He should probably condemn We gave Him all our customs Our politics and wars Then confidently told the world "Good news... God thinks exactly like us." [Spoken] What are the odds? [Chorus] Made in His image That's what the old words say Then we made Him in our image And He thinks just like we do today He likes the people that we like He hates the things we hate Funny how the God we made agrees with everything we say [Verse 2] Every kingdom had His blessing Every army had Him there Both sides marched into the battle Both sides started with a prayer "God is with us!" "No, He's with us!" Heaven watched the banners wave While everybody seemed quite certain God preferred their side that day [Spoken] An interesting arrangement. Apparently the Creator had money on both teams. [Verse 3] Then we gave Him economics "Surely God wants me to thrive" My success became His blessing Which made poverty... awkward to describe If my mansion means He loves me If my fortune proves I'm right Then the poor become a problem for that theology at night Someone mentioned camels Needles Rich men Giving wealth away We agreed this sounded important... Then changed the subject for the day. [Chorus] Made in His image That's what the old words say Then we made Him in our image And He thinks just like we do today He approves my aspirations He validates my ways Funny how the God I follow never tells me I should change [Verse 4] Then we handed God our politics Put a slogan in His hand Asked Him to endorse our candidate And bless our five-year plan Left and right both claimed Him Every speech invoked His name God apparently changes platforms depending who explains. [Spoken] The Creator of the universe would like to clarify: He has not endorsed your yard sign. [Bridge] Maybe that's the harder question Not, "Does God agree with me?" But, "How much of what I call God is just myself reflected back at me?" If He never contradicts me Never challenges my pride Never asks me to forgive The people on the other side If He always wants what I want And condemns who I condemn... Am I following God? Or have I simply invented Him? [Verse 5] Love your enemy sounds lovely Till you actually have one Forgive the people who have hurt you That's considerably less fun Feed the hungry Help the stranger Put the weakest near the first These are excellent suggestions for somebody else to do first. [Final Chorus] Made in His image Maybe that's still true But perhaps the image isn't meant to look exactly like me or you Maybe God won't join our tribe Or validate our rage Maybe faith begins the moment He disagrees with what we say And if the God that I created Always tells me I am right Maybe I should ask myself... In whose image is it really tonight? [Outro] Humanity looked toward heaven and proudly presented God with His new identity. His politics. His enemies. His economic preferences. His approved social circle. And everything He was supposed to hate. There was a long silence. Then: "That's fascinating." [Pause] "But who exactly... is that supposed to be?" [Spoken] God made man in His image. Man returned the favor. And we've been arguing over the resemblance ever since.
