[Intro - Spoken, quiet acoustic guitar] I dropped something last night. Wasn't gone but a few minutes. Turned around, walked back, And it was already gone. Funny thing is... I wasn't nearly as bothered by what I lost, As I was by what it said about us. [Verse 1] I retraced my steps beneath the evening sky, Looked along the sidewalk as the world passed by. Couldn't have been more than a minute or two, But somebody found it, and nobody knew. A couple folks stopped, asked what I'd lost, Kindness still living, whatever the cost. But somewhere between the taking and giving, We forgot what it means to be living. [Pre-Chorus] Was there a time when a stranger was a friend? When a helping hand was something you could lend? When what wasn't yours was left alone, Or someone came looking to bring it home? [Chorus - Raspy, emotional, building] Oh, what happened to us? When did we lose our trust? When did a thing on the ground Become a treasure to be found? What happened to doing what's right? To looking out for someone tonight? We built ourselves a world of things, But lost the heart that kindness brings. Oh, what happened to us? What happened to us? [Verse 2] I remember a world, or maybe a dream, Where things weren't always what they seem. A neighbor would knock when something went wrong, And strangers would help you get along. Now everybody's looking for a little more, Something for nothing, another open door. Finders keepers, that's what they say, But what if you're the one who lost something today? [Pre-Chorus] We teach our children to watch their backs, Lock up their doors and cover their tracks. But what are we teaching when nobody cares, When somebody's loss becomes somebody's share? [Chorus - Full acoustic band] Oh, what happened to us? When did we lose our trust? When did a thing on the ground Become a treasure to be found? What happened to doing what's right? To looking out for someone tonight? We built ourselves a world of things, But lost the heart that kindness brings. Oh, what happened to us? What happened to us? [Verse 3 - Softer, reflective] Maybe the one who found it needed it more, Maybe life's been harder than it was before. Maybe they never stopped to see, That what they found belonged to me. And I don't know their story, Don't know the weight they bear. But a world without a little honesty, Is a world without much care. 'Cause trust isn't something you buy or sell, It's the little things we do when no one can tell. It's choosing what's right when nobody sees, It's knowing we're more than our own needs. [Bridge - Stripped down, raw vocals] And I don't need a perfect world, Don't need everybody to agree. Just a little consideration, For the next man walking next to me. 'Cause one day you'll be the one who's lost, And someone else will count the cost. Will they turn away or lend a hand? Will they take what's yours or understand? And if we can't trust our fellow man, How much longer can a community stand? [Instrumental - Fingerpicked guitar, harmonica] [Verse 4 - Hopeful, intimate] But a couple people stopped that night, Asked what I'd lost beneath the light. They didn't know me, didn't owe me a thing, But somehow their kindness made my heart sing. And maybe that's the part I'll choose to keep, Not the thing I lost out on the street. A little reminder that we're not all gone, There's still some good worth holding on. [Final Chorus - Emotional, uplifting] Oh, what happened to us? We don't have to lose our trust. A thing on the ground ain't yours to claim, And another man's loss ain't a winning game. We can still choose to do what's right, Be the helping hand in somebody's night. We built ourselves a world of things, But it's love that gives our living wings. Oh, what happened to us? There's still a little hope in us. [Outro - Spoken, guitar fading] I never found what I lost that night. But a few people cared enough to ask. And maybe that's where we start. Not by changing the whole world... Just by remembering... We're supposed to look out for each other. [End]
