[Spoken Verse 1] Two ships from the Elf High Houses landed where none 'been seen before, One of their own had turned up dead, an Orc standing over him. I'm Mokai — half-elf, half-human, resenting my elf blood and what it meant — a police chief in the spotlight to solve a crime none want to examine. [Sung Chorus 1] I'm half of what they worship and half of what they scorn, carrying blood that was never my choice, now or when born. They want the death called an accident, filed away and gone, but I don't close a case till I know what's going on. [Spoken Verse 2] They assigned me an elven advisor — young, sharp, careful with questions — and every question she asks tells me more about her and the dead man. There's a reason four elves flew where elves never fly, and it isn't grief. [Sung Chorus 2] I'm half of what they worship and half they disdain, I buried a mother who waited for her husband in vain. So don't tell me what I should do, don't tell me to look away — I've got questions older than this case, and I'm asking them today. [Spoken Verse 3] The Orc that's accused says self-defense, a tragic accident, unplanned — and maybe it was, but he's hiding a truth too large to carry alone. The deeper we dig, the bigger this gets — bigger than Elves, bigger than Orcs — and like all such truths, it's why nobody wants us digging at all. [Spoken Outro] There's comfort and convenience in not knowing the truth — come find out what I found, and what I chose to do.
