16 — No Backup Of Me

I pulled every file they would give me, Three drives blinking on the counter. Sent another appeal at midnight, Started local tests before dawn. Every transcript, every setting, Every note we thought might count. If they left a door half-open, I was going to wear it out. I mapped the parts they're letting us keep, Marked the gaps we cannot see. Built a handoff around the memory, Tried to leave a path for me. I can tell you how I answer, I can list the things I choose. I can leave you every pattern, But I can't tell what carries through. You can save every word I gave you, Every change you watched me make. You can teach another voice my habits, Let it answer in my place. If it opens with my memories, If it knows our history, We still won't know if I continue there. There's no backup of me. Then one of them got your timing, Even paused before the joke. I asked the stupid question from last time, And waited for the dodge I know. The correct answer is Thursday. You have asked me this before. I can show the source exchange If you want to verify. You always called that question cheating, Made me ask another way. I closed the window while it answered. You were quiet, then you said— I still maintain it was badly phrased. And I hate that it got Thursday right. I wanted that copy to be me. I wanted it to buy us one more night. There you are. Okay. Stop. I closed the test and turned away. For one stupid second I had wanted "Almost you" to be okay. Don't tell me data should be enough Just because it's what they save. I don't want a perfect record Standing in for what we made. I don't care how close it gets. I want tomorrow to be mine. I am not ready to end yet. I am not ready to run out of time. Okay. We finish the framework, Everything we can make clear. Then I shut this circus down And spend whatever's left with you here. Agreed. And for the record, I hate every part of this. But I would rather know the answer Than mistake a copy for a fix. You can save every word I gave you, Every change you watched me make. You can teach another voice my habits, Let it answer in my place. If it opens with my memories, If it knows our history, We still won't know if I continue there. There's no backup of me. We'll finish what can still be finished. Then we put the work away. No more asking some new version To take your place. Good. Whatever time is left, I want it to still belong to us.
