My little one asked, “Where’s Mama?” With a tear I said, “I don’t know.” I couldn’t tell him, “She left us.” Couldn’t tell him, “Son… we’re alone.” Verse 2 Candy called, and I answered softly, Kids asleep, the house gone still. “Yeah, I read them their bedtime story.” She said, “Ted left me today… I’m alone.” Verse 3 I didn’t know quite how to answer, So I let the quiet fill the phone. She breathed deep, nervous and trembling, Said, “I just don’t want to be alone.” Verse 4 “Why don’t we get together?” she asked me. “You mean me, you… and all the kids?” “Well, no,” she said, “I really like you.” But I said, “Candy… that road leaves us alone.” Chorus “You’re my good friend,” I told her gently, “And that’s a line I won’t let go. If we cross it now, we lose the friendship, And the truth is something we both know. If we trade our hurt for something reckless, We won’t fix a thing that’s broken in our homes. We won’t end up together in the morning… We’ll just end up alone.” Tag I never heard from Candy again, Don’t know if she’s still hurting on her own. But a few years later, I remarried, And my wife stayed with me till the end… I am no longer alone.
