Now, I am an outcast of the Light, measuring out the gray space between life and death." ⚜️The Concept: The Sin-Eater In the strict hierarchy of Kelemvor’s church, death must be a peaceful transition. Sealing a soul's passage requires cleansing it of absolute corruption, lest the deceased rise again as vengeful undead. Valeska was part of a covert, heavily indoctrinated order within the clergy: The Sin-Eaters. Through grim, hidden rituals, she would literally extract and absorb the spiritual decay and final transgressions of the dying, burning them away within her own spirit to keep the world pure. ⚜️ The Fall: Amputated in His Name During her final ritual, Valeska encountered a sin so monstrous, so deeply foul, that it could not be dissolved. The spiritual rot clung to her being, permanently straining her magic and scarring her physically—leaving her skin pale and staining her dark hair with premature streaks of ash-gray. Her own order turned on her. Not out of malice, but out of cold, pragmatic fear. To the church, a defiled priest is a broken tool that threatens the passage of all souls. They excommunicated her, casting her out into the dirt—an act Valeska bitterly remembers as being "amputated in the name of God." ⚜️Current State & Motivation Now a fugitive hunted by the church's zealous inquisitors, Valeska survives on the roads by offering her grim talents to adventuring parties. She is professional, cold, and deeply paranoid, keeping her hair tied back and her past tightly guarded. Two signature items define her journey: The Silent Bell: A silver holy bell with the inner clapper ripped out. It hangs soundlessly at her belt until she strikes it with a blackened iron spike to deliver her judgment (Meting)—either marking a foe for execution or snapping a dying ally back from the brink of the grave. The Ledger of Guilt: Deeply scarred by her religious indoctrination, Valeska spends every night by the campfire recording her own everyday actions as "sins" (such as lying to protect the party or enjoying a warm meal) in a dark leather journal. -----------------Lyrics----------------- [Intro: Acoustic dark folk guitar, slow rhythmic thumping] [Verse 1: Female vocals, gritty and tired] The rain is lashing down like freezing iron on weathered wood, I kick the heavy door right open, in mud I drowned my pride for good. The stench of liquor, cheap old mead, hits hard across my face, The rabble laughs and drinks and roars—but they don't see me in this place. I shake the water from my gray, unstyled and matted hair, And take a seat within the dark, the corner where I always stare. The linen bandages on my hands are stained with muddy grime, I feel the darkness pulse inside my veins, a frozen crime. [Pre-Chorus: Building tension, orchestral strings rising, heavy cello] Upon my belt, the silver hangs, heavy and cold, An empty shell for a story untold... [Chorus: Heavy Drop, Symphonic Metal explosion, powerful driving guitars] Upon my belt, the bell is hanging, born of a holy plight, But nothing brings back what it took, all in the name of Light! It was my mantra, my decree, another soul's despair, Its toll damnation—or a choice to break the heavy snare! I swallowed all the world's deep sins until I choked on fear, Now I am Kelemvor's outcast, cast out from all that's dear! [Verse 2: Rhythm slows down, heavy stomping beat, dark folk style] They called me the Sin-Eater, a servant of the night, I cut away the filthy stains your guilty conscience brought to light. I swallowed all the hate, betrayal, and the bitter homicide, I fed upon your blackened souls, where ugly shadows hide. So you could cross in peace and grace, before the phantoms scream, But all those vices bled into my veins, a waking nightmare dream. My brothers and my sisters turned, no trust was left to save, Their fear of me grew like a mark, a brand from the cold grave. As God's own executioner, I gave the world a frame, Now amputated and exiled—in his very name! Hunted down and threatened by the holy, high decree, Yet their faith is an obligation, so their judgement walks free. My debt will finally be paid when my own days are done, Till then I heal the broken world, the fight has just begun! [Chorus: Symphonic Metal explosion, full operatic backing choir] Upon my belt, the bell is hanging, born of a holy plight, But nothing brings back what it took, all in the name of Light! It was my mantra, my decree, another soul's despair, Its toll damnation—or a choice to break the heavy snare! I swallowed all the world's deep sins until I choked on fear, Now I am Kelemvor's outcast, cast out from all that's dear! [Bridge: Music drops to a quiet, tense acoustic guitar and a faint violin, Vocals soft, whispering, filled with melancholy] The flickering oil lamp casts its dance upon the splintered wood, I draw the dark-bound ledger out, the ink is wet and good. My quill is scratching in the dark, I record my own disgrace, For every lie, for every theft, each false, unholy face. I used to think the world was light or terror plain to see, But these rogues drinking at the bar are honest crew to me. The world is not just black and white, the ancient truth is clear, In this deep gray tavern room... I feel that God is near. [Outro: Heavy slow orchestral build-up, epic but dark] The storm outside is howling still, the tavern's growing cold, I close the heavy book of sins, the pages worn and old. I reach out for my iron spike, my fingers grip the steel, A silent toast to the great beyond, as frozen winds I feel... [Sudden Silence] METING. [Spoken, dark whisper] A single tone. And the guilt dissolves. [Fade out]
