the 3rd choice - part2
They taught us light would conquer dark and cleanse the world of sin, Yet every war for righteousness left graves where hope had been. The banners changed, the names evolved, the speeches all were new, But every side that claimed the truth still swore the others knew. I watched the light side spill its blood and call the slaughter just, While blackened hands showed acts of grace where none had earned their trust. The heroes spoke of saving all, the villains preached despair, Yet both were made of flesh and bone and breathed the same air. For every saint I came to know had shadows deep inside, And every monster I had feared had wounds they could not hide. The scholars wrote of good and evil locked in endless war, But neither side could tell me what the endless killing's for. I searched the scriptures, crossed the seas, and climbed the highest peak, Only to find the deepest truths were buried at my feet. The white side wasn't purely light, the black side wasn't night, Both carried seeds of cruelty and sparks of something bright. The line they drew across the world was never what it seemed, A border built from fear itself and strengthened by a dream. A dream that all the world could fit in boxes neat and small, Where one side held the righteous few and one side held the fall. But people aren't so simple as the stories we recite, For darkness learns to wear the day and goodness hides from sight. So I refused to choose a face when both belonged as one, And stepped beyond the spinning coin beneath the burning sun. They asked me if I served the light or pledged myself to shade, I said I serve the living souls for whom these games are played. I will not march beneath a flag that tells me who to hate, Nor worship any cause that feeds upon another's fate. I will not call a person good because they wear my sign, Nor call another evil just for standing past my line. For every war begins the same: two armies standing proud, Both certain heaven knows their names and speaks for them aloud. The third path is a lonely road that few are taught to see, Not blind to evil's presence, nor pretending all are free. It sees the darkness in the heart and light that still remains, And knows that both must be confronted if we're breaking chains. So if you ask which side I chose when all was said and done, I chose the edge where both sides meet instead of either one. For good and evil both are real, yet neither stands alone, And peace begins the moment that we stop casting stones. The coin still spins before the world and many choose a face, But I stepped off its edge one day and found a different place. A place where truth is not a sword nor hatred's battle cry, And where the worth of any soul is not decided by The color of the flag they bear, the creed they learned to sing, But by the choices that they make when tested by the sting. So let the coin keep turning if it must beneath the sky, I've seen the trap beneath the game and know the reason why. The greatest lie was never black, the greatest lie was never white, The greatest lie was thinking either side could ever win the fight. For every face belongs at last to one unbroken whole, And peace begins the day we learn the war lives within the soul.
