King of the Crop

V4.5-ALL

Out in the field where the old winds sigh Got a patch of pumpkins ‘neath a haunted sky I got dirt on my hands and sweat on my brow But something ain’t right in the fields right now Moon comes risin’, hear the branches groan And you hear an evil cackle that'll turn you to stone Every year I plant, and every year I pray But then the king rolls in and takes it all away The Old King arrives when the harvest’s near With his jagged smile sayin' hold my beer Smashin’ my fields like a storm set free There just ain’t any peace for a farmer like me I sow and I tend, but it's all in vain I lose it all to the Pumpkin King Granddaddy warned me ‘bout the fae out here Said they don’t forget and they don’t play fair Told me, “Boy, don’t farm where the ley lines run” But this land was ours ‘fore the curse begun Now I leave out cider and I leave out bread Try to calm the creatures that'll wake the dead But the howlin’ comes when the veil grows thin And the pumpkin king marches 'cross my fields again The Old King arrives when the harvest’s near With his jagged smile sayin' hold my beer Tearin’ through the vines like they got no soul Turnin’ my gold to a barren hole I sow and I tend, but it's all in vain I lose it all to the Pumpkin King I seen his eyes in a lantern’s glow Burnin’ like fire from down below A king of ruin, a king of strife Without a care in the world how I live my life Ain’t just crops that he’s claimin’ now It’s in my bones, it’s in this ground But I’ll stand my watch with a rusted blade On the edge of the field where my debts are paid Let the Old King come, let the cold wind scream I ain’t givin’ up on this stubborn dream If I fall tonight, let it be out here In that field of orange gold that I still hold dear I’ll sow and I’ll tend till my last cry rings Defyin’ the curse of the Pumpkin King Come next fall when the leaves turn red They’ll say that I fought where the brave ones bled And maybe one year, ‘neath a safer sky My pumpkins will grow… and the King won’t rise.
