There was a time I'd spend too long On things that didn't need it A passing word, a change of plans And wonder where the evening went I'd carry every little thought As though it weighed a ton And somehow miss the better part Of what was going on It's a curious little habit Giving everything its place Even things I don't need to keep I can simply let them drift away A little less serious Without caring any less Not everything that happens Deserves the same concern A little less serious But I know what matters still I can hold on to what's important And let the smaller things be small I used to think a proper day Should have a certain shape A list of things accomplished With no surprises on the way But sometimes all the little turns That interrupt the plan Can bring the kind of happiness You couldn't have arranged There's a pleasure in the detours In the things we didn't choose Sometimes what we never planned Is the part we hate to lose A little less serious Without caring any less Not everything that happens Deserves the same concern A little less serious But I know what matters still I can hold on to what's important And let the smaller things be small I still care about the details I still notice when things change I still have my little habits And some I wouldn't rearrange But a thought can stay a thought Without demanding something more And a day can be worth having Without knowing what it's for A little less serious Without caring any less Some days ask for all I've got And some ask for a little rest A little less serious With no need to look away I can give my best to what matters And still enjoy an ordinary day I haven't lost my interest In the things that matter most I just find the world more interesting When I don't hold it quite so close.
