where the clouds come to rest,
Sat a monk with a beard
and a hole in his vest.

He'd abandoned desire,
He'd abandoned his name,
But he still checked his messages,
just in case someone came.

A bird climbed the mountain,
said, "I've learned how to fly!"
The monk scratched his chin,
then looked up at the sky.

"To where will you ascend?
And what will you find?
If you leave yourself behind,
who's the one left behind?"

The bird looked confused,
said, "I just came to say hi."

The monk nodded slowly,
and replied with a sigh.

The cage is open,
but the door's in my mind!
I spent forty years searching,
for a truth I can't find!

If silence is golden,

A traveler approached him,
with a question of love:

"Does it last forever?"
The monk pointed above.

"See the leaves on that tree?
They were green yesterday.
Now they're brown on the ground,
and the wind takes them away."

The traveler said,
"So... should I ask her out?"

The monk closed his eyes,
and whispered:

"...I have doubt."

And when the mountain was quiet,
and the visitors gone,
The monk sat there wondering
what he'd been running from.

He could explain every sorrow,
give each wound a name,
But knowing why the fire burns
doesn't take away the flame.
