Modern Translation: He said he had begotten a child, And told him gently with a mild tale: “Let,” he said, “your wife care for it, Give it her milk and let it suck, And you shall have a rich reward — Broad lands and a noble estate.” The king scarcely believed all this, Yet the queen gave birth soon after that — A fair boy, a noble offspring, Born to the gate. An old grey-haired man received him, So it is written in the chronicle; It was Merlin who took him in. He went forth, without deception, To a church he went with honor, And had the child christened Arthur. Afterward, he went swiftly, And brought it to Sir Antor’s wife. He found her in childbed And placed the child in her hands, And gently told her with kind intent: “Your reward shall be rich and good.” Merlin went away at once — No man saw him again for many a day.
