Can't Tell the Hour

V5.5

Rivers I drew as a child in blue With a sun on top and the banks below I thought I knew how the water ran Then I swam in one so cold against my skin The river carried me past where I could see Carried off something that belonged to me I can’t fight the pull I can’t fight the cold And rivers are where I don’t belong Love I had drawn with a steady line Two hearts linked with a valentine A door held open a known address The names we’d answer to more or less Then love walked out a surprise instead Left me alone left the words unsaid I can’t find the door I can’t find the vow And now love is where I don’t belong Time I drew a clock in a friendly hall A round marked face that explained it all Hours and minutes you set in a row Each one ripening certain and slow Then time turned sideways and slipped away Left me older left me the same I can’t tell the year I can’t tell the hour And now time is where I don’t belong Rivers and love and the turning years I’ve drawn them simply I’ve drawn them clearer I thought I knew and I’ll admit it plain I didn’t know any of them But I’ll try Again
