🌙 Night Poacher

Oh me, oh my, what to do? I need a fairy for my potion, or maybe two I wake in the evening from my nap Go to my secret place to check my traps I'm the Night Poacher, not wicked or cruel And not heartless, I know what I do With potions and brews, my nights I spend Need just the right fairy for my blend Pretty ones that glow work the best I trap them up and throw out the rest Looking for their sparks and glows Where are my traps? Only I know! Bubble and boil in my pot Add a little fungi and tree rot I stir until it starts to steam Add the fairy, and her little screams In my jar I see a little shine And I can hear her little cries These appeals carry no emotion I need her essence for my potion I am not a mean woman But maybe a bit shrew I need certain things You see, for my brew I'm the Night Poacher, the fairies say They tell their children to stay away! But fairies are a curious bunch I catch a couple a week... if I want Careful, a fairy has magic as well They can also cast their little spells That danger, sparks and commotion Makes the finest quality potion! I'm the Night Poacher, without grace Set my traps, don’t leave a trace For every fairy caught, a spell I weave And get paid a lot indeed I sprinkle stardust Whisper their name Drop ‘em in my brew Without any shame This is my forest They’re mine to claim! I'm the Night Poacher, I deal in gold Don’t care if they cry or if they’re cold With every capture, my power grows I don’t have time to feel bad. I’m old! My cottage warm, my hearth is dry Nothing scary to see by human eye But fairies tell another tale about me An evil witch that never lets them free I'm the Night Poacher, I pray on the fae Follow their cries to find my way Don’t think I’m heartless, I’m not! It’s good business, every fairy caught Here I go into the dim moonlight Out to check my traps this night I’m so excited! It’s thrilling fun! Tonight maybe I’ll get two in one I am not a mean woman But maybe a bit shrew I need certain things For my special brew I give you a jar. What do you do? Drop her in your potion Or just keep her to view? Maybe the Night Poacher... Is now YOU! *For my mother - I wrote parts of this to go along with a sculpture I did for my mother more than 20 years ago. This story has lived on in my mind and I'm so happy to be able to really go into the story and put it to music, Hope you enjoy!
