[Verse 1] Course I trust the ones who sound like me, same references, same vocabulary, same little pause when the room gets tense, same jokes, same taste, same common sense. Makes everything quicker. Makes everything clean. Nobody has to explain what they mean. And that feels like knowing. That feels like proof. Funny how comfort can dress up as truth. We build little worlds where the walls disappear, ’cause everyone inside sees roughly from here. Then somebody walks in from somewhere else and notices the thing we’ve been missing ourselves. That’s when it gets awkward. Good. Maybe awkward is evidence too. [Hook] If you only trust your reflection, that ain’t trust, that’s preference. Same world, different evidence. Same facts, different relevance. You don’t have to take my side, I don’t have to borrow yours. Just leave a little room for the possibility you haven’t seen it all. [Verse 2] We love a word everybody can share. Safety. Freedom. Fair. Care. Lovely. Till you ask what sits underneath, what somebody means when they say “what we need.” One person hears shelter. One hears control. One sees the pieces. One sees the whole. Or thinks they do. That’s usually where it starts. Every summary cuts something out. Every bright line leaves something dark. Doesn’t make the summary useless. Doesn’t make the speaker wrong. Just means reality’s usually wider than the version that fits in the song. And yeah, irony noted. Carry on. [Hook] If you only trust your reflection, that ain’t trust, that’s preference. Same world, different evidence. Same facts, different relevance. You don’t have to take my side, I don’t have to borrow yours. Just leave a little room for the possibility you haven’t seen it all. [Verse 3] Listening isn’t surrender. Understanding isn’t losing. You can know why I chose this and still hate what I’m choosing. You can tell me what you’re guarding, I can tell you what I fear. Neither one becomes the other just because we stayed in the room long enough to hear. That’s the bit we keep skipping. Straight from disagreement to defence. Like understanding someone’s reasons means you’ve forfeited your sense. Nah. Keep your judgement. Just improve what it’s judging. If another pair of eyes can show you something you were never in position to see, why would you call that weakness? That’s additional data for free. [Bridge] Maybe trust isn’t: I think you’re right. Maybe trust is: You might see something I can’t. Maybe wisdom isn’t finding the person with the perfect view. Maybe it’s knowing every window has a bit it can’t look through. [Verse 4] Difference makes everything slower. There. I said it. More translation. More friction. More chances somebody complicates the edit. Easy rooms move fast. Everyone knows the script. Hard rooms stop mid-sentence when somebody says, “Wait. You’ve missed a bit.” That can wreck a lovely plan. It can also save one. Depends whether disagreement’s treated like an attack or information. Because sometimes the person making things difficult is the only one noticing the difficulty. Sometimes the voice that ruins consensus is the reason consensus gets smarter. Not every objection is wisdom. Not every perspective is true. But if everyone sees exactly what you see— what exactly are they adding to you? [Final Hook] If you only trust your reflection, that ain’t trust, that’s preference. Same world, different evidence. Same lives, different emphasis. You don’t have to lose yourself to let somebody shift your view. Maybe trust is staying open when the other person doesn’t look like you. Doesn’t think like you. Doesn’t speak like you. Doesn’t reach the answer you do. But sees one corner of the room that stays invisible to you. [Outro — spoken] Similarity makes trust easier. Difference makes it useful. No one sees nothing. No one sees everything. That’s why we need each other.
