Little Lantern, Walk Beside Me (Remastered)

Little lantern, walk beside me Do not dance ahead If the dunes begin to whisper Hold your breath instead If you hear your mother calling From the hollow sand Touch the sister walking near you Do not raise your hand Little lantern, walk beside me Little flame, stay true Stars may hide their silver faces I will walk with you Count the shadows, count them slowly One and two and three If your shadow walks before you Turn and do not see If the wind forgets its blowing If the heat turns cold Tie your sash around your fingers Do as you were told Little lantern, walk beside me Little flame, stay true Stars may hide their silver faces I will walk with you Do not drink from glassy water Do not touch blue rain If the stones begin remembering Do not speak your name If the dead ask where you’re going Tell them, “Not today” If they ask you why you’re living Sing and walk away Little lantern, walk beside me Little flame, stay true Stars may hide their silver faces I will walk with you When the tatakai are marching Hear their anklets ring Every step was once a cradle Every vow could sing When the little ones are sleeping When the lamps are low Sisters cross the bunting sand Where children must not go Count the shadows, keep the ember Hold the line and see No one walks the desert lonely While a sister breathes Little lantern, walk beside me Little flame, stay true If I fall beneath the darkness Carry what I knew Little lantern, walk beside me Little flame, stay true Stars may hide their silver faces I will walk with you Little lantern, sleep beside me Little flame, stay true Stars may hide their silver faces I will watch, with you
