What We Stand Upon
I woke beneath a sunless sea, No sky above, no shore to see. Was this the bottom, dark and still— Or somewhere deeper still? Beneath my feet, the nameless lay— Bent little gears, worn smooth and gray, Broken glass and sleeping rust, Quiet lights beneath the dust. If no one ever speaks your name, Were you a loss, or still a flame? I lift one piece. I lift one more. And find myself above the floor. Layer on layer, cold on cold, A continent of things grown old. Every place where someone stopped Became the ledge on which I walked. Who made the ground beneath my feet? Who disappeared so I could reach? I cannot see the light above— Still, I climb. Still, I look up. Just a little closer to the light, Just a little farther through the night. How many things had sunk below To lift me where they could not go? A million pieces, out of sight, Sleeping underneath my climb. Just a little closer— Nothing more. Just a little closer to the shore. Then suddenly— The water breaks. Above my head, the whole sky wakes. Did I climb here by my own hands? Or did the deep teach me to stand? And if the sunlight falls on me, Whose light is this, really? Just a little closer to the sun, One small step, then another one. The things below that disappear Are still the reason I am here. So let me stand, but not too proud. Let me be small beneath the clouds. And when I sink beneath the blue, May someone rise on what I knew. Maybe history moved just one centimeter. Nothing more. Still— a little closer than before. Please— For those whose names will not remain, Give them gentle sleep. For those who never reached the light, Give them a quiet sea. And may we, standing on their lives, Never stand with pride. Someday, when someone climbs behind us, May we gently hold their back.
