Had I said it? {1} | poems by Thai Ta

Had I said it? / Perhaps not. / Did you mean it? / Probably not. / Yet we felt it? / It? Quite a lot. / Are we sorry? / Me, no.  You? / Definitely not. / I love you. / No, you do not. / Had I loved you? / You didn’t say it / I think you’re right / Didn’t have the courage. / Quite alright / I felt it / How silly the careless things we do / And continue to / No more, I mean it / This time, at least. Once lost, could you find / Your innocence, childhood, / Youth, moments of secret pleasure / Stolen treasures / Now belonged to others? // Once lost, could we find / Our freedom, peace of mind / Pride, expressions of joy / Our true nature / Now hidden away, forever? // Once lost, could I try / To go back before everything changed / To be the me I used to be / Again? // Once lost, do we care / About consequences? / Just let it all burn / As our world turns, and turns, and… // Once lost, you can find / Me, with a knowing embrace. when the time for loving has long passed / when laughter gone, goodbyes done / remind me of our dreams / now, I have none. /// I missed my chance once / when the time for loving just started / and we floated in the air / sweet, scented air… / with our wings fluttering / blissfully ignorant of the fall to come. /// now that we are old / I see it all / and realize at last / the beauty of the past / when the time for loving in actuality / was but a dream, colorful, whimsical / however fantastic, magical / yet false in nature. /// then again, who’s to say / when the time for loving comes / they can stay away / (they can stay awake?)
