Full Lyrics: (Flowing piano opens) Verse 1 Late at night when the traffic’s thin Servo lamp glows where the bitumen’s been Truckies pull in from the long haul run Rub their eyes from the setting sun Some are headin’ north up the coastal way Some are turnin’ back where the cane-fields lay They lean against the old counter top Talk ‘bout the roads they’ve got to stop Pre-Chorus Somewhere along the long black track We leave some dreams and we take some back Some days we win and some days we fall But we keep movin’ on, one and all Chorus Servo lamp glow — shinin’ on the open road! Every traveller’s heart got a heavy load! Servo lamp glow — guides them through the night! Queensland light, shinin’ bright! Servo lamp glow — shinin’ on the open road! Every traveller’s heart got a heavy load! Servo lamp glow — guides them through the night! Queensland light, shinin’ bright! Verse 2 One bloke’s been gone for a year or more Misses his kids down the Wide Bay shore Says “I’ll be home when the next pay comes” But the long haul days keep rollin’ on Another’s headin’ north for a brand-new start Hopin’ for luck with an open heart They sip hot tea where the lamp shines down Watch the dark stretch out beyond the town Pre-Chorus Somewhere along the long black track We leave some dreams and we take some back Some days we win and some days we fall But we keep movin’ on, one and all Chorus Servo lamp glow — shinin’ on the open road! Every traveller’s heart got a heavy load! Servo lamp glow — guides them through the night! Queensland light, shinin’ bright! Servo lamp glow — shinin’ on the open road! Every traveller’s heart got a heavy load! Servo lamp glow — guides them through the night! Queensland light, shinin’ bright! Bridge When the first faint pink hits the eastern sky They fire up the rigs and they wave goodbye That old lamp fades ‘neath the mornin’ sun — But the road goes on, and the journey’s not done Final Chorus Servo lamp glow — shinin’ on the open road! Every traveller’s heart got a heavy load! Servo lamp glow — guides them through the night! Queensland light, shinin’ bright! (Fade: soft piano + distant truck hum)
