One afternoon, I came across a quiet piece of music. Its melody, carrying the fragrance of black tea and the softness of gentle light, lingered in my heart. It was from that lingering afterglow that this song was born. A melody born in a distant place becomes a new song somewhere else. There was something quietly joyful in that small chain of music continuing on. This piece is a modest homage to a certain afternoon melody. I would be happy if it could softly accompany you through a quiet afternoon. Afternoon light falls softly by the window, a melody arriving from a far-off city. Beyond the steam rising from a teacup, someone’s hour sways in quiet stillness. As though turning the page of a silent book, a single note descended into my heart. Though we have never even met, it is nostalgia alone that lingers here. Before words could ever come, the melody reached out its hand, and dyed that unseen afternoon slowly into the very same hue. Afternoon Etude opens in the wind, beyond the fragrance of black tea. Your time, spun at a distant window, gently overlaps with a single song. As if, even without speaking, we might somehow understand— there is a quiet happiness resting here with us. To have met between the notes— for that alone, the afternoon has become tender. Soft strings and a pale piano, like lace-lit shimmer trembling in the air; I feel as though a bell rang somewhere far away, and a small story kindles in my chest. Even if we have never breathed the same air, even if we have never known the same afternoon, at the end of a single melodic line, someone is surely smiling. Words left unspoken, and yet a presence still arrives. In the margins of the page, our hearts brush lightly for a moment. Afternoon Etude opens in the wind, a quiet song like a camellia in bloom. The graceful time you wove at that faraway window reaches me here. Music knows such small miracles: that with someone we have yet to meet, we may still share the selfsame afternoon. And if someday the day should come when we sit at the same table, surely we would not fall into long conversation. Only through the steam of tea we would smile a little, and then begin once more, in silence, to write our separate melodies. Afternoon Etude crosses over the wind and gently binds two cities together. Even without ever having met, a tender resonance sounds here, true and clear. What does not fade, even unspoken— music alone seems to know. Today, having touched your afternoon, I return it to you by turning it into song. The warmth remaining at the bottom of the cup, the afternoon light not yet gone— to that song at the distant window, I now offer this small etude.
