[Verse 1] The Devil wore a crown of gold Sat in the room, calm and cold Said, "Look at me, I'm holy" And the whole house bowed so slowly He took the name from the purest tongue Spoke it sweet, then the spell was hung Every eye stayed on the flame While the thief just stole the name [Pre-Chorus] His first lie came dressed like light Made a throne out of the night And all the hands that reached for truth Found a mirror with a bruise [Chorus] The Devil's greatest lie Was to say he was God The Devil's greatest lie Was to wear that sacred fraud His second is to say That he doesn't exist But the first one takes them all And the second makes it stick [Verse 2] He lives in the deal you make In the little inch you take In the laugh when mercy cracks In the step that never looks back Most fall for the second one "Nothing here," and then they're gone But the first one, wide and bright Is the door that kills the light [Pre-Chorus] He doesn't need a smoky hall He only needs a voice to call A borrowed crown, a borrowed frame And a tongue that won't say shame [Chorus] The Devil's greatest lie Was to say he was God The Devil's greatest lie Was to wear that sacred fraud His second is to say That he doesn't exist But the first one takes them all And the second makes it stick [Bridge] So keep your eyes on the false front On the mouth that says "I am" When the fever starts to sweeten And the wolf takes the lamb [Chorus] The Devil's greatest lie Was to say he was God The Devil's greatest lie Was to wear that sacred fraud His second is to say That he doesn't exist But the first one takes them all And the second makes it stick
